About the city

Amsterdam is the city of compromises that work. Houses lean, canals freeze rarely but reliably, and the entire city moves on two wheels. Density is European but the pace is more relaxed than London or Paris — partly because nobody is in a car.

The last decade has reshaped the city under the weight of mass tourism and a housing market gone vertical. Locals push back; rules tighten; the centre keeps getting smaller as Airbnb consumes apartments. But the working city is intact in Oud-West, De Pijp, and especially across the water in Noord.
