About the city

Porto is what Lisbon was a decade ago — beautiful, half-priced, less polished, more genuinely Portuguese. The Douro cuts through the centre with both banks crammed with tile-fronted buildings, and beyond them granite alleys climb in every direction.

The city has serious port wine heritage and a working-class soul that survives the rising tourism numbers. Renters and remote workers from Lisbon increasingly move north for the cost gap, and the city is responding with cafes, coworking, English menus in the centre. The wetter half of the year is genuinely wet — be ready for it.
